Kindergarten
Kindergarten has been meeting a library friend for each letter of the alphabet. We are now on letters T and U. Our T friend is Timothy and he is the main character in Timothy Goes to School by Rosemary Wells. What can Timothy do when his classmate, Claude, isn't very friendly? Our U friend is Underwear (believe it or not!). In Underwear, Zachary Zebra tries to convince Bismarck the Buffalo that underwear is fun to wear.
Next week, we will start a research project about North American animals. This will be in preparation for the field trip to Zoo America. Students will create their own animal booklets. 2nd Grade
2nd grade has been reading books by author, Dav Pilkey. We read his picture books - Dog Breath, Kat Kong, and Dogzilla. We read the first book in his chapter book series, Ricky Ricotta and His Giant Robot. This week we will read the Dragon books. Check out Dav's website at www.pilkey.com.
4th Grade
4th grade is busy preparing for their wax museum presentations. They are reading biographies of the famous people they plan to portray. In library, they are creating a timeline about the life of their famous person to display while they give their speeches in the museum.
We learned that biographies have the Dewey call number of 921 and are placed in alphabetical order. We also learned how to find an article in Encyclopedia Britannica to give us an overview of a person's life. |
1st Grade
1st graders have been reading books by author/illustrator, Kevin Henkes. Kevin uses mouse characters in many of his picture books. Ask your child to tell you about Lilly, Chrysanthemum, Owen, Sheila Rae, and Wemberly. This week we are reading Old Bear, A Good Day, My Garden, and Kitten's First Full Moon. Visit Kevin at his official website at http://www.kevinhenkes.com/.
This YouTube video will show you how Kevin creates his books. 3rd Grade
3rd grade is learning how to use Encyclopedia Britannica online. Later this month, in hybrid learning they will be researching a national park and creating a Google Slide Show to tell about the location, animals, plants, and history of the park. To prepare for this project, we are researching Zion National Park as a whole class in library.
5th Grade
The 5th graders have been reading the book, The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963. To build background knowledge, the 5th graders will be researching what Birmingham, Alabama was like during the Civil Rights Movement in 1963. They will be required to use a nonfiction book, a website, and a database to complete this research project. We have also been working on how to create citations for a bibliography.
Last week, the 5th graders also looked for ideas for Science Fair projects. The ideas and books we have in our library can be found in the James Gettys Science Fair 2016 LibGuide. Check it out here: http://gettysburghs.libguides.com/c.php?g=93660 |
